What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

2500 Years of Traditional Medicine Principles and 100 Years of Experience At Your Service

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a holistic approach to healthcare that originated in ancient China 2500 years ago. TCM occupies a central role in Chinese culture, medicine, and science. Over thousands of years, this alternative medicine has been perfected by practitioners, adopted by the Western world, and its benefits researched in greater detail.

How Does It Work?

Traditional Chinese Medicine combines the principles of Yin and Yang, Five Elements Theory, and a strong understanding of Qi, or life energy, that flows through the body. TCM balances the complex biochemical processes in the body and restores your health.

Is Traditional Chinese Medicine Supported by Science?

The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), NIH has determined that acupuncture, a powerful TCM medical practice, is safe when performed by experienced practitioners using sterile needles. An increasing amount of scientific research is currently focused on the benefits and effectiveness of TCM as an alternative medicine.

Although the Western World has been late in catching up with the medicinal benefits offered by Traditional Chinese Medicine, there is growing acceptance of it. In Ontario, the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturist of Ontario (CTCMPAO) regulates this field of medicine.

Different Types of Treatment in TCM

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Extracts, powders, and decoctions of Chinese herb sources like leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds, are used to balance the body’s yin and yang patterns. The herbal remedies are used to treat a range of conditions from common flu to body pain to coronary heart diseases.

Acupuncture

Thin metal needles are inserted at 365 strategic locations on 20 meridians of the body to regulate the flow of Qi energy throughout the body. Although acupuncture is best known for its pain management application, it also offers treatment against physical, neurological, mental, respiratory, and other disorders

Gua Sha

A smooth-edged tool like honed jade, ivory, smooth stones, or bones is stroked against the well-lubricated skin softly to produce red spots. When skillfully, executed, Gua Sha relieves Qi stagnation, thereby improving blood circulation, alleviating inflammation boosting immunity, and more.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy that involves the burning of mugwort (a herb) near or on the skin to heat specific acupuncture points. It stimulates blood circulation and the unhindered flow of Qi energy in the body

Cupping

We make use of dry cupping method, wherein the air inside the cup is heated before the cup is placed on the skin. As the hot air cools and contracts, it creates suction on the skin. This stimulates blood flow, revitalizes skin, and fights aging. Temporary red marks may appear and stay for up to 10 days

Can I Combine Traditional Chinese Medicine With Western Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine is generally extremely safe, has no side effects, and works independently of Western medicine. So, it is usually safe to combine both practices, except in a few cases.
